WANA (Aug 18) – Iran’s Interior Minister announced that more than 1.2 million Afghan nationals have so far left Iran, while around six million remain in the country.

During a working trip to Razavi Khorasan Province on Monday, Eskandar Momeni stated: “The highest number of Afghan departures has been recorded through the borders of Razavi Khorasan. According to current plans, the gradual return of two million undocumented Afghans who entered the country illegally is on the agenda.”

Stressing the need to regulate the migrant population, he added: “Managing this issue requires both national and international cooperation. The Interior Ministry’s policy is to facilitate the return of undocumented migrants while respecting human dignity and maintaining good relations with our neighbors.”

Momeni also noted that a meeting would be held later today in Mashhad with the participation of national and provincial authorities to review border control measures and the management of foreign nationals. He emphasized: “Border management is only possible through nationwide mobilization of resources and coordination among agencies, and we are also drawing on the experience of other countries in this regard.”
