WANA (Aug 26) – Iran’s nano product exports doubled in 2023, reaching USD 1.145 million, while with the indexing of 10,860 scientific papers in the Web of Science (WoS), the country secured 6th place worldwide in nano science output in 2024.

According to Iran’s Headquarters for the Development of Nano and Micro Technologies, these achievements stemmed from the combined efforts of the government, researchers, and knowledge-based companies in advancing cutting-edge technologies. Iran entered the nano field in 2000, and with the approval of its National Strategic Plan for the Future by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution in 2006, it set the goal of joining the world’s top 15 countries in nano. That target has now been surpassed and consolidated.

Market Growth

Between September 2024 and September 2025, Iran’s domestic nano market witnessed 102% growth in sales, reaching 618,890 billion rials. The total market value of Iranian-made nano products in 2023 was estimated at USD 1.62 million.

  • Exports and International Presence
  • In 2023, Iranian nano products were exported to over 50 countries, with Iraq, Syria, and India as the top three destinations.
  • More than 50 trade delegations were dispatched to international exhibitions in South Korea, Turkey, China, Russia, and Japan to expand export opportunities.

Innovation and Patents

Nano-related patents accounted for 19% of all national patents, including 20 patents registered with USPTO and EPO in 2024.

Development projects for seven globally innovative nano products were launched, including an arsenic-removal nano-adsorbent for water purification, a lead-acid super-battery, and an automatic microneedle production device.

The total number of Iranian nano patents registered in the US and Europe has reached 364.

Scientific Standing

  • With 10,860 published nano papers in 2024, Iran ranked 6th in the world.
  • About 32% of these publications were co-authored with international researchers.
  • In 2023, Iran ranked first globally in the indicator of “nano publications per GDP (PPP).”

Support for Research and Industry

  • Support for 1,940 research activities across 170 universities and research centers.
  • Backing of 62 industrial R&D projects and 40 nano value chain development projects.
  • Issuance of 133 nano-scale certifications for industrial products and registration of over 1,735 products by 400 active companies.

With these achievements, Iran is moving to solidify its position as one of the global hubs of nano science and industry, aiming not only to expand exports but also to strengthen the branding of Iranian products in international markets.
