11 IAEA Members Condemn Israeli Attacks on Iran’s Nuclear Sites
WANA (Jun 16) – Eleven member states of the IAEA Board of Governors issued a joint statement condemning the Israeli regime’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
During the emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors — held on Monday in response to a letter from Iran’s Foreign Minister to the IAEA Director General and upon Russia’s formal request as a board member — a joint statement was issued condemning the Israeli regime’s aggression against Iran’s nuclear facilities and expressing support for Iran’s position.
This statement was submitted by:
The Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Iraq, the Republic of Belarus, Burkina Faso, the Republic of Cuba, the Republic of Indonesia, the Republic of Nicaragua, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Full text of the statement:
“We condemn the aggression of the Israeli regime against Iran, including military attacks on nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which constitute a gross violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the Statute of the IAEA.
We strongly believe that these military attacks not only threaten international peace and security but also undermine confidence in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), represent a blatant disregard for the IAEA’s safeguards system, and endanger the further development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
We recall the resolutions of the IAEA General Conference which have emphasized that ‘any armed attack or threat of attack against nuclear facilities devoted to peaceful purposes constitutes a violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the IAEA Statute.’
We note that Iran is a non-nuclear-weapon State party to the NPT, and the targeted nuclear facilities in Iran are covered by the IAEA’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement. We recall Iran’s longstanding and firm commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.
We express deep concern about the far-reaching consequences of such a military attack against safeguarded nuclear facilities in a member state.
We call on Israel to cease its military aggression against Iran. We urge the IAEA Board of Governors, the Secretariat, and the Director General to take all necessary measures to prevent further Israeli attacks on nuclear sites and facilities under IAEA safeguards.
We request the Director General to promptly report to the Board of Governors on all consequences of Israel’s attacks on safeguarded nuclear sites and facilities in Iran and to report any further act or threat of aggression against Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities to the United Nations Security Council.”
