250,000 Cord Blood Samples Stored in Iran
WANA (Sep 11) – The Royan Stem Cell Bank has announced that it now holds the largest cord blood storage capacity in the region.
Morteza Zarrabi, faculty member at the Royan Research Institute and CEO of the Royan Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank, highlighted the bank’s activities, stating: “The most important current mission of Royan’s biotechnology company is the storage of cord blood stem cells. Cord blood, as a valuable source of stem cells, plays a vital role in treating blood-related diseases.”
Stem Cells in Disease Treatment
According to Zarrabi, cord blood stem cells can be used in the treatment of various hematological conditions such as leukemia and other blood cancers, congenital anemias, thalassemia, and immune system deficiencies.
“These stem cells can serve as an alternative to bone marrow transplants for patients with blood disorders,” he explained.
Largest Storage Capacity in the Region
He further noted: “We store more than 20,000 cord blood samples annually, and we currently hold the largest cord blood stem cell capacity in the entire region.”
Samples from Abroad
Zarrabi also pointed out that, in addition to domestic collections, numerous samples from other countries have also been preserved in Iran.
“To date, we have stored nearly 250,000 cord blood samples, making this repository a valuable resource for transplant centers,” he added.
