Iran Condemns Attack on UNRWA Headquarters
WANA (Jan 23) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the attack on the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in occupied Jerusalem as a criminal act and an unprecedented assault on the United Nations, calling for an immediate and effective response from the international community.
Esmaeil Baghaei strongly condemned the Israeli regime’s actions in damaging and occupying buildings belonging to UNRWA, stressing that United Nations premises, property, and personnel enjoy full protection under international instruments, particularly the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, as well as international humanitarian law. He noted that such blatant violations pose a serious challenge to the international legal order.
The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson said the attack forms part of a systematic policy aimed at depriving the Palestinian people of even the most basic humanitarian services, adding that the destruction of UNRWA facilities, amid the ongoing killing of Palestinian civilians, reflects a complete disregard for fundamental principles of human rights and humanitarian law.
Baghaei also underscored the responsibility of the main supporters of the Israeli regime, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, arguing that their political and practical support has contributed to the continuation of lawlessness in the occupied Palestinian territories.
He warned that continued inaction by the international community in the face of such dangerous actions would not only further undermine the credibility and effectiveness of the United Nations, but also expose international peace and stability to unprecedented threats.
