5,000 MW of Nuclear Power to Be Produced at Iran Hormoz Site
WANA (Sep 25) – Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) announced that the Iran Hormoz Nuclear Power Plant in Hormozgan Province, with a planned capacity of 5,000 megawatts, will soon enter the design and equipment phase. The project is considered a key step toward achieving the goals of Iran’s comprehensive nuclear industry strategic plan.
Mohammad Eslami, Vice President and head of the AEOI, made the remarks following his meeting with Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia’s state-owned Rosatom, during which a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on the construction of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs).
Eslami said: “We are grateful that during our visit to Russia, while reviewing ongoing collaborations and areas of mutual interest, we were able to optimize strategic cooperation between Iran and Russia.”
He added that Iran has strong ties with Russia in the construction of nuclear power plants and emphasized that this cooperation is being strengthened to align with Iran’s 20-year nuclear strategic roadmap.
Regarding the SMR deal, Eslami noted: “The world is rapidly moving toward small modular reactors. We have conducted extensive studies and possess the necessary industrial capacity. It was important for us to collaborate with Russia on this front and put a concrete project into action. Fortunately, this MoU has been signed and will quickly move toward a contract.”
Eslami further stated that the project, conceptualized two years ago, will soon enter the design and equipment phase, producing 5,000 megawatts of nuclear power.
He concluded: “Two major steps—the development of SMRs and large-scale reactors, particularly the new 1,200 MW generation—will spearhead Iran’s nuclear expansion. With divine assistance, we anticipate a profound transformation along this path.”
