Latest Status of Selecting the New Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts

WANA (Mar 08) – All members agree on the necessity of completing the process of selecting the new Supreme Leader, but there are two differing views regarding how the final result should be announced.

1. A considerable number of representatives in the Assembly of Experts believe that the expert evaluations and necessary reviews to verify the qualifications of a fully qualified Islamic jurist have been completed. Considering the current conditions in Iran, they believe there is no longer a need to hold an in-person session to take another vote.

According to this group, the secretariat of the Assembly of Experts can officially announce the name of the new Leader of the Revolution based on the conducted assessments.

2. Another group of members of the Assembly of Experts emphasizes the need to hold an in-person meeting. They believe that although the process of identifying qualified candidates has been properly carried out, it would be better to hold a session so that votes can be formally cast and the final result officially announced to the public, in order to preserve formal procedures and ensure maximum participation of members.

Investigations indicate that the most important reason for the delay in announcing the final result is security concerns.

Iran and Switzerland

Legal experts say many countries consider the attacks illegal under the United Nations Charter, which prohibits member states from using or threatening to use force without authorization from the UN or outside the framework of legitimate self-defense.
