All Extra-Safeguards Monitoring by the IAEA in Iran Will Be Halted
WANA (Jun 14) – The head of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has strongly criticized the recent conduct of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its Director General, stating: “The Agency’s wrongful behavior and the biased report of its Director General — issued despite Iran’s full cooperation — clearly demonstrate an abuse of our goodwill.”
Ebrahim Azizi, Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, spoke on a televised program about the recent Israeli attacks on parts of Iran, including the Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites, as well as the Iranian parliament’s response to what he called a hostile act.
Referring to an emergency session of the parliamentary committee, Azizi stated: “Today, in our session with colleagues from the National Security Committee, we reached specific conclusions and prepared a set of recommendations, which will be formally submitted in the coming days to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).”
Emphasizing the Islamic Republic’s approach to engaging with international institutions, Azizi added: “In response to the recent resolution passed by the IAEA Board of Governors, we concluded in the committee that Iran’s cooperation with the Agency should be limited strictly to the legal framework defined under the Safeguards Agreement — that is, the same international and legal basis under which Iran is a member of the NPT and a party to the Safeguards agreement with the IAEA.”
He continued: “The decision we reached today — which is expected to be finalized tomorrow — does not require parliamentary approval or a vote in the public session, because it is based on the implementation of an already-ratified law, namely the Strategic Action Plan to Lift Sanctions.”
Azizi clarified: “We are simply asking the head of the Atomic Energy Organization to fully implement this law. It explicitly states that all activities beyond the Safeguards Agreement must be halted. Therefore, all extra-safeguards inspections and monitoring must come to a complete end, and inspectors operating in Iran outside the safeguards framework should no longer be allowed to do so.”
He added: “Our insistence is that cooperation with the Agency must be strictly confined to the legal Safeguards Agreement. Voluntary measures previously taken by Iran outside this framework must not be repeated. The Strategic Action Plan stresses this, and today the National Security Committee reaffirmed its determination for full and uncompromising implementation.”
Azizi again sharply criticized the recent actions of the IAEA and its Director General: “The Agency’s wrongful conduct and the biased report from the Director General — despite the Islamic Republic of Iran’s full cooperation — are a blatant misuse of our goodwill. Even within Iran, some political factions criticized us for giving the Agency too much leeway and cooperation. And yet, what we received in return was a politically motivated and unfair report.”
He concluded: “The first step the National Security Committee is demanding is a serious review of the level of cooperation with the IAEA, in full accordance with the law ratified by parliament. We are not asking for anything beyond the law — but its full implementation is the clear and non-negotiable demand of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly.”
