Amnesty International Denounces U.S. Threats to Iranian Power Grid as Potential War Crimes
WANA (Mar 24) – Amnesty International has formally condemned threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump to target Iran’s power plants, warning that such actions would constitute a violation of international humanitarian law and could amount to war crimes.
In a statement released Tuesday night, the human rights organization asserted that attacking infrastructure vital to the basic needs of millions—such as electrical grids—could trigger catastrophic consequences.
The group highlighted that the destruction of these facilities often leads to the widespread loss of access to clean water, healthcare services, and food supplies.
Erika Guevara-Rosas, Senior Director of Research, Advocacy, and Policy at Amnesty International, urged the U.S. administration to immediately retract these “irresponsible threats.”
She emphasized that targeting civilian infrastructure is strictly prohibited under international law. Because power plants are essential for the survival and livelihood of the civilian population, any strike against them would be considered disproportionate and unlawful.
The organization further noted that by threatening such strikes, the United States is demonstrating a willingness to plunge an entire nation into darkness.
Amnesty International warned that such a move would deprive citizens of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, health, and an adequate standard of living, while inflicting severe suffering on the general public.
