Araghchi Announces Conditions for Ceasefire and Hormuz Transit
WANA (Apr 08) – Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, said in a message issued on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council that Tehran is prepared to halt its defensive operations if attacks against the Islamic Republic stop, while also allowing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for a two-week period.
According to the statement, Araghchi expressed appreciation for the efforts of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, for what he described as their tireless efforts to end the war in the region.
In the message, Iran’s foreign minister referred to the request made by the Pakistani prime minister, as well as Washington’s request for negotiations over its 15-point proposal, and stated that the U.S. president had accepted the general framework of Iran’s 10-point proposal as the basis for talks.
Araghchi then, on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, formally announced two key elements of Tehran’s position.
Iran to Halt Defensive Operations if Attacks Stop
Under the first point of the message, the Islamic Republic stated that if attacks against Iran cease, its armed forces will also halt their defensive operations.
The statement said: “If attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran stop, our powerful armed forces will also stop their defensive operations.”
Safe Passage Through the Strait of Hormuz for Two Weeks
In the second point, the statement said safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be possible for a period of two weeks, in coordination with Iran’s armed forces and subject to existing technical limitations.
It added: “For a period of two weeks, safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible in coordination with Iran’s armed forces, taking into account the existing technical constraints.”
Appreciation for Pakistan’s Role in Reducing Tensions
Araghchi’s message was issued at a time when Pakistan has been actively engaged in efforts to reduce tensions and help bring the war in the region to an end. His direct reference to the “brotherly request” of the Pakistani prime minister underscored Islamabad’s active role in the recent diplomatic contacts.
The statement also suggests that Tehran, acting through the framework of the Supreme National Security Council, has defined a clear position that combines continued defensive deterrence with a limited and time-bound mechanism for de-escalation and managed navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the release of Seyed Abbas Araghchi’s statement outlining Iran’s conditions for a ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump reshared the statement on his official page on Truth Social.
