WANA (Jun 28) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Baghdad on Sunday at the head of a diplomatic delegation for meetings with senior Iraqi officials.

Shortly after his arrival, Araghchi held talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. During the visit, he is also scheduled to meet with Iraqi President and Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.

Baghaei said the visit underscores Tehran’s commitment to strengthening ties with Iraq, describing the neighboring country as a top priority in Iran’s foreign policy due to the two nations’ deep cultural and historical bonds.

The visit also aims to coordinate arrangements for funeral ceremonies honoring the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution at Iraq’s holy shrines.

Upon arriving in Baghdad, Araghchi paid tribute at the site where General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were assassinated, laying a wreath in memory of the two commanders and their companions.

The trip follows recent diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Baghdad, including telephone conversations between the Iranian and Iraqi foreign ministers after the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States to end the war.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said strengthening relations with Iraq remains one of Tehran’s top foreign policy priorities.

In a post on X shortly after arriving in Baghdad with Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Baghaei said the delegation would meet with Iraq’s president, prime minister, and foreign minister after paying tribute to the “Commanders of Victory.”

He added that Iran’s deep cultural and historical ties with Iraq ensure that expanding bilateral relations will remain a top priority for Tehran.
