WANA (May 13) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday night at the head of a high-ranking delegation to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

 

Upon his arrival, Araghchi was received by Anand Prakash, Director General for Regional Affairs at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, alongside Mohammad Fatali, the Iranian Ambassador to India. The welcoming party also included Hojatoleslam Hakimollahi, the Representative of the Supreme Leader in India, and staff from the Iranian Embassy.

 

The Iranian Foreign Minister is accompanied on this trip by:

  • Sara Fallahi, member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament.

 

  • Hamid Ghanbari, Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy

 

  • Mohammad Reza Bahrami, Assistant Minister and Director General for South Asian Affairs.

 

Focus of the Meeting

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on Thursday and Friday (May 14 and 15) under India’s chairmanship. The sessions will focus on regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic resilience. During the visit, Araghchi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, as well as other participating ministers and officials.

 

Context and BRICS Leadership

India assumed the BRICS presidency from Brazil on January 1, 2026. This ministerial gathering serves as a precursor to the 18th BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to take place in New Delhi this September under Indian leadership.

 

The BRICS bloc, which originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to include 10 member nations following the accession of Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
