WANA (Aug 17) – Addressing the recent drone strikes in Erbil, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned against attempts to divide the region, stating on X (formerly Twitter):

 

“Nothing justifies the reckless attack on PM Barzani’s office. Kurdish friends should be vigilant against false-flag ploys to sow discord between neighbors.

 

We protected our Kurdish friends against Saddam and DAESH, and we’re thankful for security they’ve provided on our border.”

 

Echoing the Foreign Minister’s comments, a senior Iranian source speaking to Al-Mayadeen characterized the incident in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as another example of a “false-flag” operation.

 

The developments follow reports from the official Iraqi News Agency, citing the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate, which confirmed that two drones targeted the office of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister and the residence of the local security director.
