WANA (May 15) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on Friday morning to discuss bilateral relations, the strategic situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional security.

 

Araghchi, who is in New Delhi to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, expressed his gratitude for India’s hospitality and successful hosting of the summit. He voiced optimism that India’s presidency of BRICS would lead to enhanced coordination and significant achievements for the group.

 

Focus on Regional Tensions and Maritime Safety

A central focus of the dialogue was the aftermath of the recent 40-day conflict. Araghchi briefed Jaishankar on the current “fragile ceasefire” and the ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a permanent end to the war.

 

The two ministers engaged in detailed consultations regarding the Strait of Hormuz, exchanging views on maritime security and the vital importance of maintaining regional stability.

 

Araghchi further, in a post on X, wrote: “In fruitful engagement with my host Dr Jaishankar, discussed regional developments and clarified that Iran will always carry out historical duty as protector of security in Hormuz. ”

 

He added, “Iran is a reliable partner of all friendly nations, who can rely on safety of commerce.”

 

India Advocates for Diplomacy

Minister Jaishankar reaffirmed the historically warm and friendly ties between Tehran and New Delhi. He emphasized India’s principled support for diplomatic solutions to resolve international disputes and conflicts.

 

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is currently underway (May 14-15) in New Delhi, focusing on regional stability, multilateral cooperation, and economic resilience.

 

Following the meeting, the Indian Foreign Minister, in a post on X, also mentioned his meeting with Araghchi.
