WANA (Jul 07) – Iran’s Foreign Minister said that negotiations between Tehran and Washington on a final agreement will not begin as long as threats against Iran persist, calling on the United States to honor its commitments under the jointly signed memorandum of understanding.

 

On Tuesday, after attending the funeral ceremony for Iran’s late leader, Seyed Abbas Araghchi shared a photo from the event on X, writing that millions of Iranians had gathered in “unity and solidarity” to pay tribute to Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and his “enduring legacy.” He added that “neither the Iranian people nor the country’s armed forces fear any threat.”

 

Araghchi went on to refer to Article 13 of the memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, saying that it explicitly states that negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement will not begin as long as threats against Iran continue. Concluding his message, he urged Washington to “honor its signature.”

According to the published text of the memorandum, Article 13 states that negotiations on a final agreement may begin only after the memorandum has been signed and provided that the implementation of the commitments outlined in Articles 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11 has begun and continues. Those negotiations would be limited to the remaining provisions of the agreement.

 

Araghchi’s remarks come as the future of negotiations between Iran and the United States remains closely tied to the implementation of the memorandum’s provisions and to efforts by both sides to reduce tensions.
