Araghchi on Joint China–Iran–Russia Letter to UN
WANA (Oct 19) – Iran’s Foreign Minister has issued a statement regarding a joint letter by China, Iran, and Russia addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.
Seyed Abbas Araghchi shared excerpts from the letter on his account on the social platform X, writing: “China, Iran, and Russia emphasize that the attempt by the three European countries to trigger what is referred to as the ‘snapback mechanism’ is legally and procedurally invalid from the outset.”
He added: “China, Iran, and Russia reaffirm that, in accordance with operative paragraph 8 of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, all provisions of that resolution will terminate after 18 October 2025 (26 Mehr 1404).”
In their joint letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, the Ambassadors of Iran, Russia, and China described the European countries’ effort to activate the snapback mechanism as “procedurally flawed and devoid of legal standing.” They further stated that the full and timely expiration of Resolution 2231 marks the end of the Security Council’s consideration of Iran’s nuclear issue.
Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in his own separate letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, declared that Resolution 2231 has now definitively expired.
He stressed that any claim to ‘restore’ or ‘revive’ terminated resolutions is fundamentally null and void, lacks any legal basis, and cannot produce binding effects.
