Araghchi: Progress in Talks Depends on the Other Side’s Seriousness
WANA (Feb 09) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Iran is fully serious in the negotiations that have recently begun and is seeking real, result-oriented talks, stressing that progress will only be possible if the other side demonstrates the same level of seriousness.
Speaking on Monday, February 9, at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the Islamic Republic, attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and foreign ambassadors based in Tehran, Araghchi said the past year had witnessed major and rapid developments in Iran, the region, and the international arena.
He referred to a 12-day war, subsequent developments in New York, European countries’ moves at the UN Security Council, and recent unrest in Iran, which he described as a large-scale terrorist operation carried out between January 8 and 10 with external guidance. He said these events, along with the US military buildup in the region and the recent resumption of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, had created a highly complex environment.
Araghchi stressed that Iran’s nuclear issue has no solution other than diplomacy, noting that this reality has been proven repeatedly. “Whenever the Iranian nation has been addressed through pressure and coercion, it has responded with resistance, and whenever it has been approached with respect and dignity, it has responded in kind,” he said.
Addressing the ongoing talks, the foreign minister reiterated that Iran is fully serious and seeks genuine negotiations aimed at achieving results, provided that the other side is prepared for meaningful, outcome-oriented engagement.
He pointed to what he described as a deep wall of mistrust resulting from US conduct in recent years, particularly over the past year, expressing hope that the necessary confidence could be rebuilt to allow the talks to move toward a concrete outcome.
Araghchi also expressed regret over the difficulties faced by members of the diplomatic community in Tehran during the past year, including disruptions caused by security developments and temporary restrictions, stressing that all measures had been taken to ensure the safety of Iranian citizens and foreign diplomats.
In closing, he voiced hope that the coming year would bring greater peace and stability to the region, emphasizing that Iran’s policy is to pursue close cooperation with its neighbors and to work actively toward reducing tensions, strengthening regional stability, and preventing further escalation.
