Araghchi: Resolution 2231 to Expire on October 18
WANA (Oct 17) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 will automatically expire on October 18, effectively removing Iran’s nuclear issue from the Council’s agenda.
Speaking from Kampala, Uganda, where the 19th Meeting of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Foreign Ministers was held, Araghchi described the gathering as one of the most successful in recent years, noting the breadth and importance of its outcomes.
“The final document contains more than 1,500 clauses, reflecting NAM’s positions on global political, economic, social, and international crises,” he said, emphasizing that the movement represents the voice of the Global South and developing nations pursuing their legitimate interests.
Araghchi highlighted that the meeting strongly condemned Israeli attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran, both in its statement and final document, which also denounced assaults on Iran’s nuclear facilities and expressed solidarity with the Iranian people.
He added that the NAM also adopted firm positions on Palestine, condemning Israeli “terrorist actions” in Lebanon as threats to regional stability. On Iran’s proposal, provisions supporting victims of chemical weapons were also included in the final text.
The foreign minister described the NAM stance on the “snapback” mechanism as the meeting’s most significant outcome, noting: “The movement’s statement affirms that the European trio’s attempt to trigger the so-called ‘snapback’ is illegal. From the perspective of NAM’s 121 member states, no such mechanism has been activated. Therefore, Resolution 2231 remains valid, and previous resolutions and sanctions have not been reinstated.”
Araghchi reiterated: “According to the provisions of Resolution 2231, it will automatically terminate on October 18, and consequently, Iran’s case will be removed from the Security Council’s agenda. This is not only Iran’s position but also that of Russia, China, and several other Council members.”
He confirmed that Iran has formally communicated its stance in a letter to the President of the Security Council, and concluded by emphasizing: “With the support of 121 NAM member states, this meeting represents a major diplomatic achievement for the Islamic Republic of Iran in multilateral diplomacy.”
