WANA (Sep 19) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, held a telephone conversation on Friday, September 18, to discuss bilateral and international issues.

In the call, the Iranian Foreign Minister congratulated Cho Hyun on his appointment as South Korea’s Foreign Minister and underlined the Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation in all areas.

The two sides also exchanged views on the upcoming vote in the UN Security Council regarding Seoul’s draft resolution aimed at lifting sanctions against Iran.

Highlighting the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, Araghchi stressed that Iran has always considered diplomacy the only solution to international issues, including its nuclear program, and stands ready to pursue any fair and balanced approach that ensures mutual interests.

He added that South Korea, as the current president of the Security Council, whose primary responsibility is to maintain peace, is expected to prevent processes that could escalate tensions and instead pave the way for diplomacy.

For his part, the South Korean Foreign Minister, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Council in September, reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to the procedures of Security Council resolutions and expressed hope that all parties would continue their efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.

At the conclusion of the call, both sides agreed to seize the opportunity of the upcoming UN General Assembly session to hold a bilateral meeting and further consultations.
