Araghchi: The Future of Iran–Armenia Relations Is Very Bright
WANA (Aug 16) – On the eve of the President’s visit to Armenia, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized:
“Iran, drawing on our shared historical past and future horizons, is ready to cooperate with Armenia in writing a new chapter in our longstanding friendship—a chapter that will undoubtedly bring greater prosperity and security to both nations, the region, and beyond. The future of Iran–Armenia relations is very bright, and no one can derail this path.”
In a note published by Armenia’s Armenpress news agency ahead of the official visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to the Republic of Armenia, Araghchi recalled the words of renowned Armenian writer and poet Hovhannes Tumanyan, who likened friendship to a deeply rooted tree that becomes more fruitful and resilient the more it is nourished. He wrote:
“This beautiful metaphor aptly describes the strong bond between our two nations—a relationship shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, mutual respect, and shared experiences.”
Joint celebrations such as Mehregan, Navasard, and Vardavar (the Water Festival), along with the vibrant Armenian community in Iran that has flourished for generations, and the intertwined histories of Iran and Armenia, all symbolize the rich coexistence of our peoples. The Islamic Republic of Iran was among the first countries to recognize Armenia’s independence in 1991—a decision that reflected the depth of our relations and our commitment to supporting neighbors during pivotal historical moments.
Today, the link between Iran and Armenia is sustained by the large and active Armenian community in Iran, the country’s largest religious minority. They play a vital role in all aspects of Iranian society—from representation in parliament to preserving their culture through churches and institutions—demonstrating Iran’s respect for religious diversity. Economically, cooperation reflects a win–win relationship. Despite unjust and unilateral sanctions, Iran has remained one of Armenia’s most important trading partners, proof of the mutual trust between our countries. Our complementary economies offer vast opportunities for growth and development that can bring prosperity to both nations.
The geopolitical outlook of our region further highlights the strategic importance of our ties. In times of global uncertainty and regional shifts, the interests of Iran and Armenia are increasingly intertwined. As natural partners, our shared border is not merely a geographic fact but a bridge for cooperation in energy, transport, people-to-people ties, and regional security. Iran remains committed to supporting peace and stability in the South Caucasus, and believes that Armenia’s security, prosperity, and progress align with Iran’s vision for broader regional stability.
Iran considers itself duty-bound to support peace and stability in the region, emphasizing that sustainable security and any regional projects must be based on respect for territorial integrity, national sovereignty, legitimate governance, mutual interests, and the non-interference of foreign powers. At the same time, we are fully aware of the immense potential ahead. Current trade volumes represent only a fraction of what could be achieved through advanced projects such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). This corridor, linking 13 member states, connects Iran’s southern ports to Central Asia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, and Eastern Europe—reducing transport costs by up to 30% and cutting transit times in half. Progress has already been made through continuous consultations, including the rapid expansion of rail networks and the development of Chabahar Port, which will play a vital role in enhancing regional security and economic growth.
Our guarantee of cooperation rests on strong historical foundations while focusing on future opportunities. The close cultural ties between our peoples—most evident in the respect Iranians show toward their Armenian compatriots—provide a solid basis for deeper political, economic, and technological collaboration. Within this framework, President Pezeshkian’s visit carries special significance. It is not only a diplomatic engagement but also a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to opening new horizons in bilateral relations. Historical bonds, geographic proximity, complementary economies, and common regional interests all converge to strengthen cooperation.
Looking ahead, countless opportunities lie before us: joint infrastructure projects that physically connect our peoples, academic exchanges that link our ideas, energy cooperation, and cultural initiatives that honor our shared heritage. These are the building blocks of a transformative partnership. Moving forward, historical goodwill, mutual trust, tangible shared interests, and, above all, the political will of both capitals will remain the pillars of further strengthening our ties.
The road ahead is clear. Iran, guided by our shared historical past and future horizons, is ready to work with Armenia to write a new chapter of enduring friendship—one that will undoubtedly bring greater prosperity and security to our two nations, our region, and beyond. The future of Iran–Armenia relations is very bright, and no one can divert us from this course.
