WANA (Apr 30) – Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded to recent remarks by Donald Trump, stressing that using any name other than “Hormuz” for the strategic strait would be a serious and unacceptable mistake.

In a post on X marking Iran’s National Persian Gulf Day, Araghchi highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, noting that it commemorates the expulsion of the Portuguese from the Strait of Hormuz by Iranians around 400 years ago.

Referring to Trump’s latest comments, he added that the U.S. president uses the correct term “Persian Gulf,” rather than what he described as fabricated alternatives promoted by certain institutions. However, he emphasized that replacing the name “Hormuz” with any other term would undoubtedly constitute “a very bad mistake.”

The remarks came after Trump recently shared an image of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Sea of Oman, labeling the strait with a fabricated name, “Trump Strait.” The move has drawn criticism, particularly given his previous use of incorrect terms for the vital waterway.
