Araghchi Urges Recognition of Sanctions as Crimes Against Humanity
WANA (Aug 13) – Iran’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said the inhumane sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies should be recognized as crimes against humanity. Citing a Lancet study, he noted that unilateral sanctions, especially those by Washington, can be as deadly as war, killing over 500,000 people annually — mostly children and the elderly — since the 1970s.
Referring to a recent study published in The Lancet, Seyed Abbas Araghchi wrote on the social media platform X: “Western regimes have always claimed that sanctions are a bloodless alternative to war.”
“But what is the reality?”
According to the study published in the prestigious medical journal, unilateral sanctions — particularly those imposed by the United States — can be as deadly as war itself. Since the 1970s, more than 500,000 people have died each year as a result of sanctions, with children and the elderly making up the majority of victims.
“It is time for these inhumane sanctions, imposed by the United States and its allies, to be recognized as crimes against humanity,” Araghchi stressed. He added that sanctioned countries must respond to this systematic injustice through a coordinated, united, and collective effort.
