WANA (Jul 24) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday warned against the seizure of Iranian assets, describing the move as a dangerous precedent after U.S. President Donald Trump said frozen Iranian funds would be used to compensate for damages to ships and cargo.

 

In a post on X, Araghchi said confiscating a country’s assets to cover hypothetical and unrelated future claims would set a dangerous and destabilizing precedent with far-reaching consequences for the international legal and financial system.

 

“The seizure of one country’s assets to pay for potential and unrelated future claims creates a dangerous and inflammatory precedent,” Araghchi wrote.

 

He further warned that those who welcome or benefit from such funds should remember that once governments normalize the confiscation of other states’ assets, no country’s property will remain secure or immune from similar actions.

 

“The chaos and instability resulting from such a course of action will be neither desirable nor peaceful,” he added.

 

Araghchi’s remarks came after Trump announced in a Truth Social post early Friday that, effective immediately and until further notice, all damages related to ships, cargo, or associated property would be compensated using Iranian assets and funds seized and held under U.S. control.

 

Trump said the damages could be “substantial,” but argued that using the frozen Iranian assets for compensation would be “fair and just.”
