Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will depart for New York on Tuesday and deliver his speech at the General Assembly on Wednesday morning local time (afternoon Tehran time).
During his trip, the President will also hold talks with world leaders, meet with the UN Secretary-General, and attend sessions with think tanks, certain forums, and members of the Iranian diaspora.
This marks President Pezeshkian’s second visit to New York in his capacity as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His participation comes at a particularly critical moment, as recent developments in Iran and the broader region have amplified the importance of the trip.
The backdrop includes mounting political pressure and economic sanctions by the U.S. during Donald Trump’s second presidential term, Israel’s U.S.-backed military attack on Iran and the ensuing 12-day imposed war, the European troika’s unlawful attempt to re-trigger the “snapback” mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran after a decade of negotiations, Europe’s inaction and non-compliance with the JCPOA, and the continued unilateralism and excessive demands of the U.S. and the West despite Iran’s readiness for dialogue and a diplomatic resolution of disputes. These circumstances have heightened the sensitivities surrounding this visit and drawn international media attention.
