As Iran Enforces Control in Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Vessel Intercepted
WANA (Apr 22) – The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported a significant security incident involving a container ship northeast of Oman, as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz reach a critical flashpoint.
Incident Details
The UKMTO received reports of an attack occurring approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman.
According to the vessel’s captain, a boat belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) approached the container ship and opened fire.
The assault reportedly caused heavy damage to the ship’s bridge. Iranian sources characterized the action as “enforcing the law” rather than an unprovoked attack.
The escalation follows what Tehran describes as a violation of the ceasefire by the United States, the ongoing maritime blockade of Iran, and the recent seizure of an Iranian vessel.
In response, a spokesperson for the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now under strict control. The official stated that this status will remain in effect until the United States ensures the total freedom of movement for all vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports.
Current Status of the Strait
As a result of these developments, the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to international traffic. According to official statements:
- The passage is strictly restricted.
- Only vessels that are Iranian-owned or affiliated with Iran are currently permitted to transit the waterway.
