WANA (Aug 23) – Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will travel to Tehran on Monday at the head of an official delegation, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei announced on Sunday.

 

Baghaei said the visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Iran and Pakistan, as well as continuing Pakistan’s efforts to help promote peace and security in the region. He added that Munir is scheduled to meet with senior Iranian officials and discuss bilateral issues and regional developments.

 

The visit comes as Pakistan has in recent weeks played a mediating role between Iran and the United States, with Islamabad continuing its diplomatic efforts to help reduce tensions in the region.

 

Munir and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call on Saturday to discuss the latest regional developments and ways to strengthen peace, stability and security in West Asia. The two officials had also spoken by phone on Wednesday about regional developments, diplomatic efforts and ongoing initiatives to advance political solutions and expand consultations and cooperation.

 

Araghchi also held a phone call with Munir on August 2 to discuss regional developments.

 

As part of the ongoing consultations, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi traveled to Tehran on August 11 and met with Araghchi at the Foreign Ministry.

 

Munir previously traveled to Tehran on July 3 to attend farewell and funeral ceremonies for Iran’s martyred Leader of the Revolution, where he also held talks with the Iranian foreign minister.

 

The Pakistani army chief’s latest visit to Tehran comes as Iran and Pakistan continue consultations on regional developments and diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting stability and security in West Asia.
