WANA (Jul 07) – The body of Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Iran’s late leader, arrived in the Iraqi city of Najaf on Tuesday evening, marking the beginning of funeral ceremonies in Iraq. According to the announced schedule, the funeral procession will take place in Najaf on Wednesday morning, followed by a second ceremony in the holy city of Karbala later the same day.

 

The arrival was marked by an official reception attended by senior Iranian and Iraqi officials. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian joined Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi and other officials at Najaf International Airport to pay their respects. The Iraqi government has also declared Wednesday a public holiday to coincide with the funeral ceremonies.

 

Preparations for the event began early Tuesday in both Najaf and Karbala. Routes leading to the holy shrines and the main ceremony sites have been readied, while numerous service tents have been established to provide accommodation, food, and other assistance to visitors. Emergency, medical, security, and public service teams have also been deployed along the route between Najaf and Karbala.

 

Meanwhile, large numbers of mourners and pilgrims from Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, and several other countries gathered in Karbala ahead of the ceremonies. Religious mourning rituals, including Arabic elegies and commemorative gatherings, were held in the area between the two holy shrines. Participants carried portraits of Iran’s late leader along with various flags as they prepared for Wednesday’s funeral. Political and religious slogans were also chanted by some attendees during the gathering.

 

Before being transferred to Iraq, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s body had been honored in several days of funeral ceremonies in Tehran and the city of Qom. Large crowds and delegations from different countries are expected to attend the funeral processions in Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday.
