WANA (Mar 30) – Amid ongoing tensions affecting key global shipping routes, the possible closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is being discussed as a significant strategic option that could further increase pressure on the United States and its regional allies.

According to analysts, while disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have already created substantial challenges, shutting down Bab el-Mandeb could have an even broader impact on global trade and economic stability.

Speaking to CNN, military analyst Cedric Leighton stated that a closure of the strait by Yemeni forces would significantly disrupt global commerce. “In addition to the disruptions already caused via the Strait of Hormuz, a closure of Bab el-Mandeb would affect a large portion of global trade,” he said.

Leighton added that such a move could also cut off alternative trade routes partially utilized by Saudi Arabia, further complicating logistics in the region.

Yemeni forces, which previously targeted shipping linked to Israel during the Gaza conflict, have recently announced their entry into the confrontation involving U.S. and Israeli forces. Analysts suggest that their involvement could significantly alter the balance of power on the battlefield.

The potential closure of Bab el-Mandeb is viewed as one of Yemen’s key strategic options, although it has not yet been implemented. Experts warn that such a move could intensify economic instability, particularly across Persian Gulf countries.

Leighton noted that further disruptions could impact the supply of essential goods, including food and medicine, especially in areas already facing constraints. Without viable alternative routes through Saudi Arabia, these shortages could worsen.

While Saudi Arabia may still rely on routes such as the Suez Canal, analysts caution that closing Bab el-Mandeb would pose a serious challenge, as a significant volume of maritime traffic passes through the southern corridor.

The report also noted that the scenario has become a growing concern for Donald Trump, as efforts continue to maintain stability in critical maritime passages.
