WANA (Jan 14) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, has described the United States’ latest sanctions against Iran as an act of revenge against the Iranian people for their steadfastness in defending their country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Baghaei reacted to the new U.S. sanctions, which include increased trade tariffs on Iran’s economic partners.

He said that the Iranian people have been subjected to unjust, illegal, and cruel economic sanctions and pressures by the United States and some of its allies for more than 75 years, and that this demonstrates the deep-rooted hostility against Iran embedded in the U.S. political decision-making system.

Baghaei highlighted the illegal and inhumane nature of U.S. economic sanctions and emphasized that they inherently violate the foundational principles of the UN Charter and international law, including the principles of free international trade between states.

He asserted that these sanctions violate the fundamental rights of individual Iranian citizens and therefore constitute crimes against humanity, warning that those who impose sanctions must be held accountable for their consequences.

He also warned about the dangerous effects of unilateral coercive measures by the United States on the international trading system, stressing that the United Nations and all its organs, including the Secretary-General, bear responsibility to uphold the rule of law at the international level.

Baghaei concluded by saying that the Iranian nation, drawing on its capabilities and valuable experience in facing unjust pressures, will continue its path toward progress and development with strength and determination.
