Baghaei Condemns U.S. Ceasefire Violations and Threatening Rhetoric
WANA (May 28) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei strongly condemned the U.S. military strikes on areas in Bandar Abbas as well as what he described as Washington’s threatening rhetoric toward Iran and several regional countries. He said threats to “destroy” a United Nations member state represent a dangerous sign of the normalization of lawlessness and bullying in international relations.
Speaking on Thursday, Baghaei denounced the U.S. military attack carried out in the early hours of the morning against areas in Bandar Abbas, calling it a blatant act of aggression against Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. He stressed that the actions constituted a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, adding that the UN Security Council has a legal responsibility to hold the United States accountable.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also accused Washington of repeatedly violating the April 8 ceasefire agreement, citing attacks on commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf and international waters, as well as recent airstrikes on southern parts of Iran. He emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains determined to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Baghaei further condemned what he called threatening remarks by U.S. officials against Iran and Oman, while expressing solidarity with the Omani government and people. He stated that threatening a UN member state that has consistently played a constructive and responsible role in promoting regional peace and security — and has long acted as a diplomatic mediator in regional affairs — amounts to a violation of the fundamental principle prohibiting the threat or use of force.
His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday night: “The straits will remain open to everyone and under no one’s control. We will oversee them… Oman will behave like everyone else, or we will blow them up.”
Meanwhile, U.S. officials announced early Thursday that American forces had carried out what they described as a “defensive operation” against targets in southern Iran. One U.S. official claimed the strike targeted an Iranian military site that allegedly posed a threat to American forces and maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that following the U.S. military’s early morning attack on an area near Bandar Abbas Airport, an American air base identified as the source of the attack was targeted in retaliation.
