Baghaei: Iran Has Not Yet Reached a Final Decision on an Agreement with the United States
WANA (Jun 12) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the Islamic Republic has not yet reached a final decision regarding a potential agreement with the United States, stressing that while most of the draft framework for ending the conflict has been finalized, Washington’s shifting positions and new demands continue to hinder the process.
Speaking on Thursday evening, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei addressed media speculation surrounding a possible agreement between Iran and the United States, stating that changing and contradictory positions by American officials are nothing new and have been repeatedly observed in recent months.
Baghaei said Iran entered the diplomatic process in good faith and with a responsible approach, but noted that inconsistent positions adopted by U.S. officials have been one of the main obstacles throughout the negotiations.
He argued that while Washington speaks of diplomacy and negotiations, it has simultaneously engaged in military actions against Iran during the course of talks. According to Baghaei, the United States has carried out two military attacks against the Islamic Republic during the negotiation period and has repeatedly violated the ceasefire, alongside Israel.
The spokesperson also claimed that recent attacks targeted infrastructure facilities in southern Iran, including two water reservoirs in Sirik.
Referring to the status of negotiations, Baghaei said that most of the draft text had already been nearly finalized. However, he added that American officials have repeatedly altered their positions and introduced new demands, both through their representatives and in public media interviews.
He stressed that the United States has attempted on several occasions to impose what he described as unreasonable demands, but maintained that Iran has demonstrated, both diplomatically and on the ground, that it will not yield to external pressure.
According to Baghaei, some political and media narratives are designed to create the impression that diplomatic progress has been achieved as a result of pressure and threats. He argued that Iran has consistently shown it will not retreat from its principles under coercion.
“The red line of the Islamic Republic of Iran remains the interests and welfare of the Iranian people,” he said, adding that there would be no compromise on that principle.

Mediators Continue Their Efforts
Baghaei said that recent U.S. actions have naturally affected the diplomatic process, but mediation efforts remain ongoing.
He noted that both Qatar and Pakistan continue to facilitate contacts between the parties and revealed that an adviser to Qatar’s foreign minister recently visited Tehran for discussions on several aspects of the negotiations.
Despite these developments, Baghaei reiterated that contradictory American positions continue to create uncertainty and disruptions in the negotiation process.
Reports on a Signing Ceremony Remain Speculation
Commenting on media reports regarding the timing and location of a possible signing ceremony for an initial understanding between Iran and the United States, Baghaei dismissed such reports as speculation.
He emphasized that Iran’s decision-making process is clear and that all relevant institutions must carefully review every provision of any potential agreement before a final decision is made.
According to the spokesperson, issues such as the format and procedures of signing any agreement would only be discussed after a final consensus has been reached.

U.S. Actions Have Made the Strait of Hormuz Unsafe, Baghaei Says
In another part of his remarks, Baghaei addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that recent U.S. actions have created an unprecedented level of insecurity in the strategic waterway.
He said Iran and its armed forces have consistently worked to ensure safe navigation through the Strait, but argued that recent developments caused by the United States have significantly altered the security environment.
Citing statements by Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, Baghaei said that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz can no longer be guaranteed under current conditions and that the waterway has therefore been declared closed to all vessels.
He attributed the situation to what he described as unlawful and aggressive U.S. attacks on Iranian facilities in the country’s south and said warnings had been issued to shipping operators regarding potential risks.
Baghaei also alleged that U.S. attacks had recently targeted commercial vessels, resulting in damage to three Indian ships and the deaths of several Indian sailors.
He described these actions as a threat to international maritime navigation and free trade, arguing that the current instability in the region is a direct consequence of U.S. actions.
No Final Agreement Yet
Concluding his remarks, Baghaei said Iranian officials remain focused solely on safeguarding the nation’s interests, regardless of external rhetoric, threats, or political pressure.
He stated that once Iranian authorities determine that the proposed agreement fully serves the interests of the Iranian people, the government will announce its decision openly and transparently.
“As of this moment, Iran has not yet reached a final conclusion regarding the agreement,” Baghaei said, adding that the matter remains under review by the relevant decision-making bodies.
He stressed that the public will be informed immediately once a final decision has been made.
