Baghaei: U.S. and Its Allies Are the Biggest Violators of UN Charter
WANA (Oct 27) – On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Charter, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei delivered a comprehensive address highlighting Iran’s commitment to the principles of the UN while sharply criticizing the United States and its allies for what he described as persistent violations of international law. The event was held on Monday at the Ministry’s Center for Political and International Studies.
Baghaei opened his remarks by emphasizing the historical significance of the UN, describing it as “not only the greatest and only universal symbol for safeguarding peace, promoting cooperation, and advancing global development and human welfare, but also a clear reminder for humanity to learn from past sufferings and mistakes.”
He highlighted that the UN was established on the ashes of a devastating world war, learning from the failure of the League of Nations, and enshrined in its Charter the mission to protect future generations from the scourge of war, maintain international peace and security, and foster friendly relations among nations based on equality and self-determination.
He elaborated on the fundamental principles of the Charter, including the prohibition of the use or threat of force, the commitment to international obligations and agreements, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Baghaei stressed that these principles reflect the core of international law and the equal rights of all nations.
However, he warned that “since its founding, the objectives and principles of the UN Charter have been subjected to manipulation, arbitrary interpretation, and repeated abuse by those unable to free themselves from the mindset of colonial superiority.” He argued that this disregard has contributed to a world plagued by endless wars, injustice, and violations of human dignity.

Baghaei specifically accused the United States and some of its allies of being the largest violators of the UN Charter. He cited recent events in occupied Palestine, accusing Israel, with U.S. support, of committing “the largest ongoing genocide in history,” launching military attacks in multiple countries, engaging in terrorist activities, and occupying territories.
He criticized Washington and some European powers for enabling impunity for Israel, even threatening judges of the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice investigating crimes in Gaza.
Beyond the Middle East, Baghaei criticized U.S. actions in Latin America and the Caribbean, stating that Washington’s interventions in Venezuela, Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, Brazil, and other nations violated sovereignty, disrupted regional peace, and undermined friendly relations among nations. He described these actions as “provocative and persistent threats that violate international peace and security.”
Amid these criticisms, Baghaei highlighted Iran’s historical role in promoting the UN Charter and limiting the freedom of states to resort to force. He noted that, despite biases within the Security Council and other UN bodies, Iran has consistently acted as a responsible and influential member in defending the Charter. He recalled that during the eight-year war initiated by Iraq, and in subsequent decades, Iran faced unfair UN resolutions yet never resorted to denouncing or undermining the UN or its judicial institutions.
Baghaei called for renewed commitment to the UN’s founding principles, stating, “We believe in a United Nations that genuinely represents the rights of all nations. Today, let us not merely uphold the ideals, but recommit to them, ensuring the organization can prevent future generations from suffering the devastation of war.”

Baghaei also spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the occasion, expressing concern over troubling trends in the international arena. He stated that this year, the UN anniversary is observed under different circumstances, as the world today faces severe violations of the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, putting global peace and security at unprecedented risk.
Emphasizing Iran’s commitment to the UN Charter, Baghaei said that Iran has always been a civilized and culturally responsible country, working to promote peace and international security. He warned that dangerous trends such as unilateralism, normalization of the use of force, and interference in the internal affairs of countries have ensnared the international community.
Referring to the events of June, when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, Baghaei said the country was subjected to unprovoked aggression. He criticized the UN for failing this test, noting that the Security Council, under U.S. influence, could not even issue a brief statement condemning the attacks.
Baghaei also mentioned recent efforts by the U.S. and three European countries to reinstate previously lifted resolutions against Iran. He stressed that true supporters of peace and international security must remain alert to violations of international law.
He highlighted that at the Non-Aligned Movement Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Uganda, 120 countries supported Iran’s position, condemning the military aggression of Israel and the U.S., and endorsed Iran’s view that Western attempts to restore lifted sanctions are illegal.

WANA (Oct 27) – The ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations was held this morning (Monday, October 27) at the Institute for Political and International Studies of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the attendance of Iranian officials and foreign diplomats. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry […]
He further noted the positions of Russia and China, as permanent and influential members of the Security Council, stating that a large portion of the international community still remains committed to the principles of the UN Charter.
Baghaei emphasized that all countries must demonstrate their commitment to these principles in practice and avoid inaction or indifference, which only strengthens the dangerous trend of unilateralism.
When asked about the UN’s performance after eight decades, he said Iran has always been an active and responsible member since the organization’s founding. While the UN has achieved positive outcomes in areas such as global health and the environment, Baghaei criticized the Security Council for failing in its key responsibility to maintain international peace and security.
Over the past two years, he noted, the world has witnessed ongoing atrocities, yet the Council could not even issue a statement of condemnation due to the repeated support of Israel by the U.S. and certain European countries.
In conclusion, Baghaei called on the international community to take stronger action against violations of human rights and UN principles, and to actively play its role in preserving global peace and security.
