Baghaei: Understanding Between Iran and U.S. Not Yet Finalized
WANA (May 29) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that the exchange of messages with the United States is ongoing and an understanding has not yet been finalized.
Addressing recent remarks by the U.S. President suggesting that Iran “must” open the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei remarked that Iran parted ways with such mandates 47 years ago, adding that if the nation intended to operate under the dictates of others, the revolution would not have occurred.
He emphasized that Iran makes decisions based on its own interests and rights, suggesting that these demands should instead be interpreted as requests.
Regarding Donald Trump’s statements about the lifting of the naval blockade, the spokesperson described the blockade as an illegal act, a violation of the ceasefire, and a disruption to international maritime navigation. He noted that it remains to be seen whether this statement will be acted upon or if it is merely a promotional claim.
He added that if the blockade is lifted, it would effectively mean stopping a wrongful act that began several weeks ago and should never have been committed in the first place.
On nuclear matters, Baghaei explained that Iran is focused on ending the war at this stage, and therefore has no comments regarding the details of the nuclear issue at this juncture.
When asked specifically about Trump’s claims regarding the destruction of nuclear materials, the spokesperson reiterated that the current focus is on ending the conflict and that there is no discussion regarding the details of Iran’s enrichment and enriched uranium.
Turning to the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei stated that the situation is clear and accused the Americans of deliberately distorting reality from the beginning.
He explained that following the attack by the U.S. and the Israeli regime against Iran on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz was placed under special measures by Iran as a coastal state.
He clarified that while the Strait of Hormuz is closed to hostile and military vessels, commercial ships have continued to transit through the route during this period in coordination with Iran.
The spokesperson further noted that the future management of the Strait of Hormuz concerns its coastal states, namely Iran and Oman.
He highlighted the recent telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman as a reflection of this, stating that both nations have adopted a highly responsible approach toward the safety and security of the strait.
He added that they intend to establish mechanisms for the safe transit of vessels to protect their own national security and interests, as well as to benefit the international community.
In response to an inquiry regarding whether the Strait of Hormuz would reopen under Iranian sovereignty, Baghaei stated that the strait is located within the territorial boundaries of Iran and Oman.
He concluded that, faced with a special situation that cannot be ignored, Iran and Oman, as two responsible nations, must implement mechanisms to protect their interests while assuring the international community that shipping will proceed through the route.
