Baghaei: West Responsible for IAEA Resolution Fallout
WANA (Jun 12) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the IAEA’s recent resolution, calling it an “unjustified and destructive” move by the U.S. and three European countries. He warned that Iran would hold the sponsors responsible and would respond accordingly.
Baghaei denounced the use of the IAEA’s Board of Governors as a political tool by France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States to cast doubt on the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
The resolution, which passed earlier Thursday based on a report by the IAEA Director General and the joint proposal of the four countries, was labeled by Iran as baseless, unjust, and aimed at pressuring Tehran into relinquishing its legitimate nuclear rights.
Rejecting the claims made in the resolution, Baghaei stated: “This move is clearly intended to undermine the Iranian nation’s right to peaceful nuclear energy, and we will act decisively to safeguard our national interests.”
He added that allegations of Iran’s non-compliance with its obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement are “completely fabricated and unfounded,” emphasizing that even the IAEA’s own report did not explicitly make such claims. “These accusations reveal the insincerity and bad faith of the resolution’s authors,” he said.
The spokesperson criticized the historical record of the three European states and the U.S. for obstructing Iran’s scientific and economic development—particularly in the field of peaceful nuclear technology.
“For over two decades, under the pretext of fabricated ‘concerns,’ they have imposed illegal sanctions and unwarranted threats against the Iranian nation,” Baghaei noted. “Despite Iran’s full cooperation and the landmark 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), they have repeatedly sought to hinder our peaceful nuclear progress.”
He underscored that Iran has turned these pressures into opportunities, strengthening its indigenous nuclear capabilities through the resolve and ingenuity of its youth.
Baghaei also expressed regret over what he called the IAEA Director General’s biased conduct regarding Iran, citing misleading claims in his recent report and provocative interviews. He held the Director General directly responsible for undermining the Agency’s professional credibility and urged him to adhere strictly to the IAEA’s Statute and avoid politicized behavior.
The spokesperson concluded by thanking the six countries—China, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Belarus—that issued a joint statement opposing the resolution.
He also commended all other nations that voted against or abstained, demonstrating their rejection of the Western bloc’s politicized use of the IAEA. Baghaei reaffirmed Iran’s determination to defend its national rights and interests in line with the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
