Beghaei: Resolution 2231 Has Expired
WANA (Oct 18) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that as of today, October 18, UN Security Council Resolution 2231 has officially expired according to its own provisions.
Speaking at a conference titled “Legal Response to the 12-Day Aggression: From Criminal Justice to Restorative Justice” at the University of Tehran, Esmaeil Beghaei said, “In the case of the JCPOA and Resolution 2231, we have witnessed clear violations of international law by certain countries.”
Referring to the recent efforts by three European members of the JCPOA to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism, he added, “This move was illegal from the beginning, and the Security Council did not adopt any decision on it — China and Russia opposed it, while two other members abstained.”

Beghaei noted that “around 120 countries at the Non-Aligned Movement foreign ministers’ meeting supported Iran’s position, emphasizing that the attempt to reimpose sanctions had no legal basis.”
Commenting on the recent Israeli attack on Iran, he said, “The claim of a ‘preventive strike’ has no standing in international law. Iran’s response was a legitimate act of self-defense against a real act of aggression.”
Beghaei also revealed that the Foreign Ministry has documented and published its legal follow-ups regarding the recent military aggression. He added, “Although U.S. and Western support has shielded Israel from accountability, Iran will continue to pursue legal action both domestically and in international courts.”
