WANA (Oct 08) – The Commander of Iran’s Navy, Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, who is in Russia to attend the meeting of naval commanders of the Caspian littoral states, held bilateral talks with his counterparts from Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan on the sidelines of the summit.

On the third day of his visit to St. Petersburg, Rear Admiral Irani met with Captain First Rank Quli Mammadov, Commander of the Azerbaijani Navy. Following the meeting, Mammadov described Iran and Azerbaijan as “two friendly, brotherly, and neighboring countries,” adding that the two sides “enjoy close cooperation in all fields and maintain excellent coordination regarding Caspian Sea issues.”

Rear Admiral Irani also met with his Kazakh counterpart to discuss ways to enhance the quality and scope of bilateral naval cooperation. Captain First Rank Kanat Niyazbekov, Commander of the Kazakh Navy, said after the meeting that “the talks were very positive, and important agreements were reached on the roadmap for future cooperation.”

On Tuesday, the naval commanders of Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan also held a joint session during which they responded firmly to the statements and activities of certain extra-regional powers concerning Caspian Sea affairs.

Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev, Commander of the Russian Navy, emphasized that “the Caspian Sea has no access to the ocean or open waters, and under international law, no external power other than the five littoral states has the right to interfere in or comment on its issues.”

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani reiterated in the meeting that “the Caspian Sea belongs exclusively to the five littoral states,” adding, “We will not allow any external country to make decisions regarding this sea. The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to participate with full capacity and strong regional convergence in all Caspian-related initiatives.”

Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali; the embassy’s defense attaché, Colonel Rezaei-Moghaddam; and several senior Iranian Navy officers accompanied Rear Admiral Irani during this visit.
