WANA (Jul 22) – Following the selective airing of an exclusive interview with Iran’s Foreign Minister on Fox News, the media team affiliated with Seyed Abbas Araghchi released portions of the omitted content, denouncing what it described as a distortion of the Islamic Republic’s official stance on Israel.

Araghchi’s media office stated that the “deliberate editing” of the minister’s responses to the American journalist’s questions had led to significant misinterpretations in the media and misrepresented the actual content of the interview. According to the statement, Fox News attempted to portray a different image of Iran’s position on the Palestinian issue and Israel’s existence—while the essence of Araghchi’s remarks, as recorded, reiterated the longstanding principled stance of the Islamic Republic: “Israel is doomed to decline as a result of its own actions.”

A Clear Position, Expressed Unambiguously

In a key section of the interview that was cut from the Fox News broadcast, Araghchi plainly stated:

“It has never been Iran’s policy to wipe Israel off the map. But I must say, there is a certain inevitability: with all the crimes Israel has committed against the Palestinians, Israelis themselves are creating conditions in which they cannot continue to exist on Palestinian land.”

This statement—which clearly emphasizes Israel’s structural demise due to its own policies—was entirely removed from the aired version. In the full interview, recorded and archived by Iran’s foreign ministry media team, Araghchi also addressed other critical issues such as the continued legal pursuit of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani and labeling what is happening in Gaza as genocide carried out with U.S.-made weapons—all of which were absent from the Fox News segment.

What Is Iran’s Policy Toward Israel?

The selective censorship of these statements once again fuels a long-standing misrepresentation by Western media: a caricatured image of Iran’s position on Israel. In this narrative, Iran is portrayed as seeking the immediate and physical annihilation of Israel through military means. However, the Islamic Republic’s official stance—which has been consistently articulated by its leaders—rejects the legitimacy of the Zionist political structure and advocates for its replacement with a single democratic state for all historical residents of Palestine, including Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

This is the same message Araghchi had clearly articulated at the BRICS summit, and one he repeated in the interview: the aim is the dismantling of Zionist ideology and the apartheid regime, not the physical destruction of Jews or direct military aggression against Israel.

Beyond Rhetoric: The Battle of Narratives

This episode illustrates that the diplomatic battle is not confined to formal negotiations. The interpretation, framing, and even selective editing of statements are also arenas of power. In international relations, declared positions are only part of the equation; power dynamics, developments on the ground, and public perception also play crucial roles.

Still, the deliberate distortion of Iran’s positions to suggest a “strategic softening”—particularly on a platform like Fox News, the traditional voice of the American right—can lead to serious misunderstandings, especially inside Iran. In an already volatile public atmosphere marked by economic, psychological, and security pressures, such misrepresentations could provoke strong domestic reactions. Iranian media outlets, in response, have called for a more accurate reexamination of the official positions and cautioned against overreaction to the media noise.

A Domestic Critique: Is Diplomatic Language Ineffective on Fox News?

Meanwhile, some Iranian analysts have criticized the tone of Araghchi’s interview itself. They argue that diplomatic language aimed at persuading or influencing Western public opinion is ineffective when addressing Fox News viewers or Trump-aligned audiences. These groups are unlikely to reconsider their stance based on measured rhetoric—in fact, more direct confrontational language might have greater impact. As one analyst put it: “The Trumpist right only pressures Trump when it sees that a regional war could lead to American troop casualties.”

In the end, the issue here is not merely a disagreement over policy, but a clash of narratives. The Islamic Republic maintains its emphasis on dismantling the Zionist regime, but its method of expression and the strategic rationale behind it are often lost—or deliberately obscured—in Western media portrayals. Araghchi’s interview with Fox News—touching on topics such as the right of resistance groups to self-defense, U.S.-made weapons used in the Gaza genocide, and legal action over Soleimani’s assassination—ultimately became yet another battleground for narrative warfare. A battleground where some in the West are actively rewriting the story through omission and distortion.
