WANA (Jul 20) – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed the death of an American soldier in northern Iraq on July 18, amid ongoing military hostilities with Iran.

 

In a statement released Sunday evening on the social media platform X, CENTCOM detailed multiple recent casualties in the region. The command reported that two U.S. soldiers had died and another was missing in action in Jordan following an Iranian strike on July 17.

 

According to the statement, U.S. military personnel recovered unidentified remains at the site earlier that day following a thorough search, and the verification process was underway.

 

In a separate incident on July 18 in northern Iraq, another U.S. soldier was killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a strike drone. CENTCOM noted that a second soldier had sustained minor injuries in the blast and remained under medical treatment. The command stated that it was withholding the identities of the deceased and missing personnel pending next-of-kin notification.

 

The announcement followed statements from U.S. Central Command early Sunday confirming renewed airstrikes against Iran. The command claimed that the operations aimed to degrade Iranian capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The military escalation comes less than two weeks after the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Tehran has accused the United States of pressuring Oman and securing backing from certain regional nations to bypass the accord, specifically violating Article 5 regarding Iranian management of the Strait of Hormuz.

 

Despite official protests from Iran, those nations reportedly opened the southern corridor of the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic in violation of the agreement, effectively collapsing the Islamabad MoU and triggering the current resurgence of regional conflict.
