China Condemns U.S. Seizure of Iranian Cargo Ship “Touska”
WANA (Apr 20) – The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned the U.S. military’s boarding and seizure of the Iranian cargo vessel Touska in the Sea of Oman. The statement comes at a time when Beijing describes U.S.-Iran negotiations as being at a “critical stage.”
Condemnation of Military Action
The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the seizure of the Touska. The condemnation follows the release of footage by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) showing three separate strikes on the vessel’s engine room, which resulted in a fire, followed by American forces storming and seizing the ship.
Diplomatic Stakes
Beijing highlighted that these events are unfolding during a sensitive period for diplomacy. “We will play a constructive role in the Iran-U.S. negotiations,” the ministry stated.
This remark coincides with comments from the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who noted today that a final decision regarding the next round of talks in Islamabad has not yet been made.
Call for Restraint and Maritime Stability
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged all involved parties to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
Responsibility: “We hope all relevant parties adopt a responsible approach, adhere to ceasefire agreements, and refrain from intensifying tensions or conflicts,” Guo stated.
Global Interests: He emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is a vital international waterway, adding that “ensuring unobstructed passage serves the common interests of regional countries and the international community.”
China concluded by calling for the immediate resumption of normal operations within the waterway to maintain global trade stability.
