WANA (Mar 24) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation to discuss regional developments and the consequences of recent U.S. and Israeli military actions involving Iran.

During the call, Wang Yi reiterated China’s position condemning the military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran.

He also extended condolences over the death of Ali Larijani, describing him as an intelligent, distinguished, and patriotic figure who played a significant role in advancing Iran’s national security interests and regional stability.

Araghchi outlined Iran’s perspective on recent developments, identifying U.S. and Israeli actions as key factors behind the current regional situation. He emphasized Iran’s determination to continue defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also described the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as inseparable from broader regional conditions, stating that tensions in the waterway stem from recent military developments. Measures taken by Iran, he said, are in line with international law and aimed at safeguarding national security and preventing further escalation.

According to Araghchi, the Strait of Hormuz is currently closed to U.S. and Israeli vessels, as well as other parties involved in military actions against Iran, while vessels from other countries may pass through with coordination from Iranian authorities.

The Iranian foreign minister also criticized efforts by the United States and some countries at the United Nations Security Council, saying the council has not addressed the root causes of the current situation and has instead focused criticism on Iran.

He added that Iran expects member states of the Security Council, particularly China and Russia, to take a firm stance and prevent what he described as the misuse of the council.

Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s opposition to what he described as unlawful actions against Iran and stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty, international law, and diplomatic solutions.

He also highlighted the positive relations between Beijing and Tehran and called for an end to unilateral approaches in international affairs.
