China: Potential Iran-US Agreement to Be Submitted to UN Security Council
WANA (May 27) – Any potential agreement between Iran and the United States must be submitted to the UN Security Council for endorsement to ensure its legitimacy and credibility, China’s Foreign Minister stated early Wednesday.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a UN Security Council session focused on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, Wang emphasized that China is actively working to help resolve the conflict between the two nations.
He explained that Beijing has maintained close communication and coordination with the primary parties involved, as well as with key regional and international partners.
Sovereignty, Non-Proliferation, and Mediation Efforts
China maintains that the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all countries in the region must be respected. The Chinese foreign policy framework emphasizes that civilian targets must be protected, the security of maritime passages and energy infrastructure must be safeguarded, and the provisions of the nuclear non-proliferation regime must be strictly enforced.
Wang identified the core issue regarding Iran as the direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran. He noted that China supports the active mediation efforts of Pakistan and other nations, alongside the steps taken by both the United States and Iran.
A Path Toward Middle East Peace
Acknowledging the complexity of the situation, the Chinese diplomat noted that a long-standing problem cannot be solved overnight. However, he emphasized that every step forward in negotiations brings greater hope for peace, adding that an earlier end to the conflict directly correlates to fewer civilian casualties.
The senior diplomat expressed hope that the involved parties will remain committed to implementing a ceasefire and continue to meet each other halfway so that peace can return to the Middle East as soon as possible.
Wang concluded by reiterating that once an agreement between Iran and the United States is reached, it will need to be presented to the UN Security Council for formal approval to establish international legitimacy and authority.
