China-to-Iran Rail Freight Surges Sixfold in Nine Months
WANA (Jan 08) – A record-breaking increase in freight trains entering Iran from China and Russia marks a clear turning point for the country’s rail network, signaling its return to the center of regional trade and offering a significant boost to economic security and transit-driven foreign exchange.
China Rail Freight Increases Sixfold
According to Shahriar Naghizadeh, the Deputy of Foreign Trade at the Iranian Railways, 43 freight trains from China have entered the country over the past nine months. This figure represents a nearly sixfold increase compared to previous years.
These trains primarily transport solar panels, power plant equipment, and industrial parts. For these shipments, Iran has emerged as a secure, fast, and entirely land-based alternative to maritime routes, effectively cutting transit time in half.
Transitioning to Commercial-Scale Corridors
The simultaneous arrival of freight trains from both China and Russia carries a significant message for the regional transit market: Iran is rapidly becoming the focal point connecting major cargo flows between China, Russia, Europe, South Asia, and West Asia.
Railway officials state that the continuity of these trips indicates that Iranian routes have moved beyond the experimental phase and are now entering the full-scale commercialization of rail corridors.
Multilateral Agreements Fuel Recovery
The revival of the southern branch of the East-West Corridor is the result of a six-party agreement between Iran, China, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. These negotiations focused on:
- Unified Tariff Structures: Streamlining costs across borders.
- Reduced Transit Times: Minimizing delays at checkpoints.
- Cross-Border Coordination: Synchronizing logistics and customs.
Statistics highlight the dramatic shift: more than 40 trains have entered Iran from China since the beginning of the current year, whereas only seven trains in total had traversed this route over the previous seven years combined.
Targeting 300 Trains by Year-End
The upward trend is expected to accelerate in the coming months. Jabar-Ali Zakeri, the Managing Director of the Railways of the Islamic Republic of Iran, announced that the target is to reach 300 freight trains from China by the end of the current year. This transformation is expected to generate direct foreign currency revenue from international transport and create sustainable transit income.
Competitive Advantages over Rival Routes
Transportation experts believe that the Iranian rail route possesses several distinct advantages over competitors, such as the “Middle Corridor” or high-risk maritime paths:
- Shorter Distance: Significant reduction in mileage.
- Integrated Land Path: Seamless transport without the need for sea-to-land transfers.
- High Security and Reliability: Guaranteed delivery times.
The high flexibility of this network is further demonstrated by the diverse destinations of the cargo, which flows from China and Russia through Iran toward southern ports, India, and Iraq.
