Construction Resumes at Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2
WANA (May 16) – The head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, announced that part of the construction work at the second unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant has resumed, with the production of key equipment for the unit proceeding as planned.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Alexey Likhachov said on Saturday that concrete pouring and rebar work for the buildings of Unit 2 have restarted, and the remaining Russian specialists on site are actively cooperating with contractors under their contractual obligations.
He noted that although the number of Russian staff at the site is reduced, most of those remaining are highly skilled managers, and technical support and consultancy for the construction work continue remotely.
Likhachov also mentioned that plans are being developed to increase the number of Russian personnel at Unit 2, but stressed that, due to security and military conditions in the region, it is still too early to return all staff.
He added that recent developments between Iran and the United States—including last week’s exchange of attacks and reports in the U.S. media about the potential resumption of hostilities—require Rosatom to proceed cautiously in deciding on a full staff return.
During the 40-day war between Iran, the U.S., and Israel, which began on February 28, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant site was attacked several times, resulting in casualties among its staff.
Earlier, following the announcement of a ceasefire, the head of Rosatom had stated that about 2,200 Iranian workers had returned to the Bushehr site and that construction activities at the project were gradually resuming.
