Delegations Walk Out During Knesset Speaker’s Address in Geneva
WANA (Jul 30) – Delegations from Iran, Palestine, Yemen, and Algeria walked out of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, as the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset delivered his remarks.
During his speech, the Knesset Speaker controversially claimed that a Palestinian state could be established “in London and Paris,” a statement that prompted sharp reactions from several delegations.
Knesset Speaker Angered by Ghalibaf’s Remarks in Geneva: Ohana Dismisses Gaza Child Hunger as “Fabricated”
Following Iranian Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s remarks likening the Zionist regime to “the Nazis of the 21st century” and his display of photos of two Palestinian children killed in Gaza, the Israeli Knesset Speaker reacted angrily, denying the starvation of children in Gaza.
He dismissed the issue without addressing official UN reports, instead questioning The New York Times for publishing one of the photos.
The Knesset Speaker also showed a video of Iranian lawmakers chanting “Death to Israel” in an attempt to deflect attention from the issue of hunger in Gaza.
On Monday, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly, traveled to Geneva at the head of a parliamentary delegation to attend the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament organized by the IPU.
He was accompanied by parliament members Abbas Ghodrati, Abdolhossein Hemmati, Fatemeh Jarareh, and Hakem Mamakani, representing Urmia.
Prior to his departure, Ghalibaf described the conference as “a valuable opportunity to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, expose the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza, and raise the demands of the Iranian nation in international forums.”
