Egypt Calls for Iran–U.S. Return to Diplomacy
WANA (Jan 31) – Egypt has underscored the importance of bringing Iran and the United States back to the negotiating table, stressing the central role of diplomacy in containing escalating tensions across the Middle East.
In line with directives from the Egyptian president, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held intensive consultations with senior officials from Iran, the United States, Qatar, Turkey, and Oman to explore diplomatic avenues for managing regional developments and reducing tensions.
According to reports, Abdelatty held separate talks with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister; Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy for West Asia; Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister; Hakan Fidan, Turkey’s foreign minister; and Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s foreign minister. The discussions focused on recent regional developments and the implications of rising tensions in the Middle East.
During these exchanges, Egypt’s foreign minister emphasized the need to intensify coordinated efforts to de-escalate tensions and pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy, reiterating that there is no viable military solution to the region’s challenges.
He warned that continued escalation could push the region toward widespread instability and insecurity.
Abdelatty also highlighted the importance of sustained communication and engagement among all relevant parties to facilitate the return of Iran and the United States to negotiations and to achieve an agreement based on mutual respect and shared interests—one that would contribute to regional security and stability.
The talks concluded with a shared understanding among all parties on the necessity of continuing serious efforts to reduce tensions and prioritizing diplomatic solutions as the most effective path forward.
