WANA (Aug 26) – Talks between Iran and the three European parties to the JCPOA were held in Geneva and concluded just moments ago.

The Iranian delegation was led by Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi, while the political directors of the European troika, along with the Deputy High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, were also in attendance.

The previous round of these talks had been held on July 24 in Istanbul.

The main focus of the discussions was Europe’s threat to trigger the snapback mechanism as well as certain issues related to the extension of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

These negotiations followed a phone conversation on Friday between Abbas Araghchi and the foreign ministers of the three European countries, as well as the EU foreign policy chief, during which it was decided that talks should continue at the level of deputy foreign ministers.

Talks with Europe to Continue, ‘Snapback’ Mechanism Has Legal Consequences

According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the main objective of these talks was to review the latest developments related to Iran’s nuclear file and to assess recent European claims regarding the potential use of the so-called “snapback” mechanism.

He emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran clearly presented its positions during the meeting and explained to the Europeans that, based on solid legal and judicial grounds, they have no right to activate this mechanism. The spokesperson warned that any such action by Europe would entail political and legal consequences for them.

Referring to the details of the discussions, he added that Iran’s principled positions regarding the necessity of lifting sanctions, safeguarding the country’s nuclear rights, and the specific responsibilities of European countries were explained clearly. It was also stressed that Iran seeks to utilize all available diplomatic capacities to protect its national interests and defend its legitimate rights.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted that the positions of both sides were clearly expressed during the talks. The European parties were fully briefed on their responsibilities, and Iran reiterated the importance of lifting sanctions and respecting its nuclear rights.

In conclusion, he stated that it was agreed that contacts and consultations between Iran and the European parties would continue in the coming days, with the hope that this process will ultimately safeguard the interests and rights of the Iranian nation.
