WANA (Sep 14) – Mohammad Eslami, Vice President of Iran and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization, criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its silence on attacks against Iran’s nuclear facilities, describing it as a clear case of “double standards.” Speaking ahead of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, he underlined the importance of introducing a resolution that would ban military strikes on peaceful nuclear sites.

Eslami noted: “While the IAEA Director General frequently issues statements and resolutions concerning the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, no condemnation has been made regarding attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which are fully safeguarded and subject to strict inspections. This reflects the application of a double standard against the Islamic Republic.”

He announced that Iran has submitted a draft resolution to the General Conference, aiming to prohibit any military action against peaceful nuclear installations. “Even if this resolution is not passed, its submission and registration at the IAEA Secretariat are highly significant, as they highlight how the UN Charter has been undermined in this regard,” he said.

Referring to a recent attack on Iranian territory, Eslami stressed that the incident not only targeted the country’s nuclear industry but also inflicted damage on the very principles of the United Nations Charter. He added that several states have already expressed support for Iran’s initiative. “Even if the resolution is not brought to a vote, raising the issue at the General Conference is still considered a positive step for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he underlined.

Eslami emphasized that attending the General Conference provides a vital opportunity to present Iran’s positions and challenge the IAEA’s double standards.

The 69th IAEA General Conference is scheduled to take place in Vienna from 14 to 18 September. Upon his arrival in the Austrian capital, Eslami was welcomed by Asadollah Eshragh Jahromi, Iran’s Ambassador to Austria, and Reza Najafi, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna.
