WANA (Mar 31) – In a telephone conversation with European Council President António Costa, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized the European Union’s “negative approach” and “biased positions” regarding recent military actions by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.

The President characterized the military strikes as a “flagrant violation of the rule of law” and a direct assault on the very principles the EU claims to protect.

The President noted that Iran had entered negotiations with the U.S. sincerely and with a constructive approach, yet it was subjected to illegal attacks for a second time mid-negotiations. “This proves that [the U.S.] does not believe in diplomacy and merely seeks to dictate its own interests,” he said.

Emphasizing Iran’s inherent right to legitimate self-defense, Pezeshkian stated: “We respect the sovereignty of neighboring countries and have no intention of attacking them. However, U.S. bases are located in these countries, and attacks against us are launched from their territories. These nations have failed their international responsibility to prevent their land from being used for attacks against Iran.”

He further clarified that the current situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is a result of hostile and aggressive actions by the U.S. and the Israeli regime.

He added: “The solution to normalizing the situation is to stop their aggressive attacks. We have never sought tension or war at any point, and we have the will to end this war, provided that requirements—especially necessary guarantees for the non-repetition of aggression—are met.”

Pezeshkian warned that the Strait of Hormuz is closed to the ships and vessels of the aggressors and their supporters, adding: “Any foreign intervention under any pretext in this war and the current regional situation will have dangerous consequences.”

He advised European countries to align their policies with international law and constructive professional engagement instead of maintaining a destructive approach toward Iran.

For his part, European Council President António Costa emphasized the need to stop the war and tension in the region, expressing concern over the negative political and economic consequences of the conflict globally.

He stated that European countries have never supported this aggression against Iran and consider it contrary to international law and regulations. He also called for the resolution of issues through negotiation and peaceful solutions.

Earlier, in a post on X, Costa said he urged restraint, the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and full respect for international law by all parties.

He described the strikes as “unacceptable” and urged Iran to engage constructively in diplomatic efforts, particularly with the United Nations, to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Costa also reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in the region.

The attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity began on February 28, 2026, during which military centers, nuclear facilities, and civilian locations—including medical centers and schools—have been targeted or damaged.

In Operation True Promise 4, Iran has carried out more than 80 rounds of drone and missile attacks targeting U.S. bases and interests in the region, as well as specific targets in Israel, inflicting significant damage on the military and security equipment and infrastructure of the United States and the Israeli regime.
