WANA (Jun 27) – Multiple explosions were reported overnight near the southern Iranian town of Sirik in Hormozgan Province, in an incident that was followed hours later by the U.S. military’s confirmation that it had carried out strikes against targets along Iran’s coastline, prompting an exchange of statements between Tehran and Washington.

 

According to initial reports, local residents said they heard several explosions in the vicinity of Sirik. It was later reported that two projectiles struck a telecommunications tower in the area.

 

Hamidreza Mohammadhosseini Takhti, Director General of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Administration, said the Port of Sirik was operating normally and that no damage had been inflicted on its facilities or infrastructure. He added that port operations had continued without disruption.

 

Reports also indicated that an explosion heard on Hormuz Island was caused by the impact of a projectile in the Masan area of Qeshm Island.

 

Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement confirming responsibility for strikes on targets inside Iran. According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted missile and drone storage sites, as well as Iran’s coastal radar facilities near the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The command claimed the strikes were carried out in retaliation for an alleged Iranian drone attack on June 25 against the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel M/V Ever Lovely, which it said was sailing out of the Strait of Hormuz along the coast of Oman. CENTCOM further accused Iran of violating the ceasefire and threatening freedom of international navigation.

 

Before the statement was released, U.S. President Donald Trump had claimed that Iran launched four drones toward commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, alleging that one struck the deck of a cargo ship while the other three were intercepted by U.S. forces.

 

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Navy had targeted U.S. military positions in the region in retaliation for what it described as “American aggression and a breach of commitments.”

 

In its statement, the IRGC said the U.S. had attacked Iran’s coastline under the pretext of a vessel’s transit through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the action as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty. It also warned that any further attacks would be met with a broader response.

 

Despite the escalation, U.S. officials sought to portray the operation as limited in scope. A U.S. official told The New York Times that the strikes did not signal the resumption of large-scale military operations or a new war against Iran. Fox News also quoted a U.S. military official as saying that the American operation had concluded.

 

The developments come as Tehran and Washington continue to present sharply different accounts of the events leading to the confrontation, with each side accusing the other of violating the ceasefire. The exchange has renewed concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz and the potential for further military escalation in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
