WANA (Aug 20) – The Esports Nations Cup (ENC), which was scheduled to be hosted in Riyadh, has been postponed due to what organizers described as “security concerns in the region.” The decision has drawn attention to the broader regional implications of the event, particularly as it came ahead of what was set to be the first-ever participation of an Israeli team in a sporting event in Saudi Arabia.

The Esports Foundation said the decision to postpone the tournament had not been an easy one, stressing that the goal was to hold the inaugural competition under “appropriate and secure conditions” and at the level expected of the event.

The participation of an Israeli team would have marked the first time Israeli athletes took part in a sporting event on Saudi soil. Riyadh’s decision to host the team had attracted significant attention in recent days, with some observers viewing it as part of broader efforts toward greater engagement and normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Al-Monitor also analyzed the postponement of the ENC in the context of the Iran war, describing it as a setback to Saudi Arabia’s plans to expand its esports industry and host major international events.

Meanwhile, analyses of Saudi-Israeli relations indicate that normalization remains a sensitive and strategic issue for Riyadh, with sports potentially serving as a platform for symbolic engagement between the two sides. The presence of an Israeli team alongside representatives from more than 100 countries in Riyadh could have carried considerable symbolic significance.

However, some reports have stressed that the postponement does not necessarily signal the end of the normalization process. If the tournament goes ahead next year, the Israeli team could still take part.

Other analysts, meanwhile, argue that the postponement could nevertheless deal a significant blow to the normalization effort. Continued security concerns and growing political and public sensitivities could expose any future participation by Israeli athletes in Saudi Arabia to increased pressure from other sports federations and public opinion.

From this perspective, the postponement of the Esports Nations Cup is more than a decision over the timing of a sporting event. It highlights how regional security developments can directly affect Saudi Arabia’s plans to host international competitions and use sports as a platform for expanding its international engagement.
